Brilliant interview - Job Hopper (Mr JH)– mind blogging answers!
Today, Mr. JH ( 10 cos in14yrs) too is laid off along with co. loyal employee (2-3 cos in 14yrs). How JH has edge over others?
Q: Why you changed 10 jobs in 14 years?
A: To get financially sound & stable before getting laid off again.
Q: So you knew that will be laid off in the yr ‘09?
A: first time laid in ‘02 due to the first global slowdown. I had not got a full-time job before Jan’03 ( 1yr without job & with compromises).
Q: Which number of job was that?
A: 3rd job.
Q: So in 6 yrs, you have changed 8 jobs ?
A: I had no other option. In my first 8 yrs of professional life, I had worked only for 2 cos. thinking one should stay with an employer to justify the saying employer loyalty. But I was an idiot.
Q: Why do you say so?
A: My salary increase marginally in first 8 yrs. I couldn’t save enough & also not worry about what will I do if I lose my job?. I never imagined losing a job b’use of slowdown.
Q: Can you brief on what happened between Jan’03 & ‘09.
A:I learnt my lessons of being company loyal & not money earning. You can save enough only when you earn enough. So I shifted my loyalty towards money & saving. I changed 8 jobs in 6 yrs assuring all my interviewers about stability.
Q: So you lied where you had already planned to change the job for which you were being interviewed ?
A: Yes, you can change jobs only when the market is up. Can I get a job now b’use of the slowdown? No. So change jobs for higher salaries only when the market is up & expected salaries are paid.
Q: What have you gained by doing such things?
A: That's the question I was waiting for. from Jan’03 to ’09 has become Rs. X p.a to 8X ,so my salary become from Rs.3 L p.a. Rs.24L p.a. (without variable) in Jan’09. I never bothered about variable as I had no intention to stay for 1 year & go through the appraisal process to wait for the co. to give me a hike.
Q: So you decided on your own hike?
A: Yes, in 2003, I could see the slowdown coming again in future like it had happened in ‘02. Though not sure by when. I was pretty sure I wanted a debt-free life before being laid off again. So I planned my hike targets on a yrly basis without waiting for the yr to complete.
Q: So are you debt-free now?
A: Yes, I earned so much by virtue of job changes for money & spent so little that today I have a loan free 2 BR flat (1200 sq.. feet) plus a loan free big car without bothering about any EMIs. I am laid off too but I do not complain at all. If I have laid off cos for money, it is OK if a co. lays me off because of lack of money.
Q: Who is complaining?
A: All those guys who are not getting a job to pay their EMIs. They made fun of me as job hopper & don’t have any co. loyalty. Now I ask them what they gained by their co. loyalty; they too are laid off like me. They were still in the bracket of 12-14 L p.a. when they were laid off.
Q: What is your advice to professionals?
A: Like Narayan Murthy had said love your job & not your co. b’use you never know when your co. will stop loving you. In the same lines, love yourself & your family needs more than the co.'s needs. Cos can keep coming & going; family will always remain the same. Make money for yourself first & simultaneously make money for the co., not the other way around.
Q: What is your biggest pain point with companies?
A: When a co. does well, its CEO will address the entire co. saying, well done guys, it is YOUR co., keep up the hard work, I am with you. But when the slowdown happens & the co. does not do so well, the same CEO will say, It is MY co. & to save the co., I have to take tough decisions including asking people to go. So think about your financial stability first; when you get laid off, your kids will complain to you & not your boss.
Q: What would you advice juniors and Seniors in IT industry?
Juniors - if you get abroad jobs, take it. It is the time to go around, free! Enjoy. Stability comes.
Seniors - as you are settled, with luck, ride the wave with others. Time the changes. Enjoy.
Both, dont forget to promise stability for yourself and company seriously at interviews.

Just a joke comment. You did not give the name of the person/ state he is from/his cast/ religion etc. If they had mentioned that, we bloggers could have started a spree slur on those state/ caste/religion people. Remember we did this in many previous such cases and enjoyed a lot! (remember comments like ‘A-. are fake’, ‘Ban-.s do not know English’ ‘M-. are fools’ ‘Bi-. Are cheats’ etc in this site)
ReplyDeleteWe lost a chance to enjoy the nonstop entertainment possibility of mud slinging to other state/caste/religion/region people!
(But I am so patriotic you know, ( only during war and cricket match!))
சூப்பர் இன்டர்வியு! :-)
